Speecheasy™
SpeechEasy™, a fluency product of the Janus Development Group, Inc., is a therapeutic device designed to dramatically reduce stuttering.
- It uses altered auditory feedback in the form of auditory delays and frequency shifts in order to provide maximum benefit to individuals who stutter.
- People who stutter can often see a remarkable reduction of stuttering in a brief period.
- Many clients also report enhanced feelings of self-confidence when using the device.
- Connie's fitting protocol requires potential wearers of the SpeechEasy™ to undergo routine hearing tests, done by an audiologist, before a fitting.
- In the interest of time, most clients choose to have the ear impression done when their hearing is tested. That way, only one visit to the audiologist need be scheduled, and if you choose to buy the SpeechEasy™, it can be ordered it at the time of your appointment. It is also possible to have the ear impression made at a separate appointment if you do not wish to take the risk of paying for an impression that might not be used.
- You can find a licensed audiologist in your area by looking in the yellow pages; or your family physician or speech-language pathologist may recommend one. The audiogram and the ear impression you need are routine services for any licensed/certified audiologist. The audiologist you choose should have experience making impressions of the ear and should use silicone material to do so.
- Please provide your audiologist with this letter as a guideline:
- Upon meeting with Connie, she will obtain a baseline sample of the patient's speech and then sample it in various contexts while the patient wears the SpeechEasy™ demonstration device.
- She will program certain combinations of settings (specifically Delayed Auditory Feedback (DAF) and Frequency Altered Feedback (FAF) into the device to determine whether or not the patient is a good candidate for the SpeechEasy™ and which combinations produce the best fluency.
- When a satisfactory fit is achieved, we will try to be sure it will be helpful in a variety of speaking situations. For example, Connie may aske you to make phone calls or talk to people other than relatives and close friends.
- If you are satisfied with the response and decide to purchase the SpeechEasy™, Connie will send your check and ear impression so your custom device can be built. Usually, the device is ready in Connie's office in two to three weeks.
- See the Contact page for information on contacting Connie to make an appointment. Appointments for Speach Easy fittings are scheduled on Fridays, and an opening is usually available within a few weeks. Fitting appointments require approximately three hours.
- Connie's fee for the assessment / fitting / follow up visit is $350, whether or not you choose to purchase a SpeechEasy™. Connie asks that you pay this fee at your first visit. A personal check is fine.
- The manufacturer's site, speecheasy.com, outlines options and prices of the device. The policy on returns can also be found here.
